I’m delighted to be Bicycle Mayor for Glasgow. I co-founded the vibrant Shawlands Bike Bus when my daughter started school in 2021, having not cycled myself for years or ever with my wee ones. This parent-led bike bus has since flourished, has had a big impact on our community and has gained global attention. It’s been an amazing thing to be part of.
After starting the bike bus, I was keen to translate my voluntary experience to employed work in community cycling, so that I could continue to make a difference. I became the families co-ordinator with Women on Wheels, a women-led cycle hub in Glasgow. Women on Wheels works to support women and families in overcoming barriers to cycling. Over the three years in this role, I have gained more experience and confidence working on the ground with women and families. I am on a mission to break down the barriers to women and families cycling in our city.
While Shawlands Bike Bus is lively and bright as a movement, I work to keep a focus on campaigning for safe cycling infrastructure and empowering families to embrace sustainable travel. I hope that my activism and my own journey into daily cycling has inspired people in the community. The most important part for me is that my work remains joyful and fun, while also having a big impact.
What are your plans as Bicycle Mayor?
I will continue to develop my work and reach families who face barriers to cycling. and develop the running of the Families Programme at Women on Wheels.
I’ll continue to organise large-scale campaign events such as Kidical Mass and Ride Bright and support others to organise their own. With lots of colour and joy in the mix too, of course!
I’ll engage with local councillors and government – with the voices of women and families at the forefront
I’ll develop specific asks and actions to the council and government. My main focus right now is to try to get a pilot of cargo bike storage in the Southside of the city.
