Edward Birt

I am an avid cyclist for transportation and for fun. I work as an executive for a large disability provider in Wollongong, The Disability Trust. I recently rode across Australia to raise funds to set up a cycling program for people of all abilities – “CycleAbility”. With the $30k I raised, we purchased an array of bikes and a storage container that allowed us to come up with a nice program that helps people with disability to get on 2 (or 3 or 4) wheels. I am active on the local Illawarra bicycle users group and the council active transport group and am well connected in my town with a positive profile to support attitude change towards and investment in cycling.

What are your plans as Bicycle Mayor?

  • I aim to support an increase in rates of cycling for people with disability in Wollongong.
  • I aim to promote and support cycling as a form of commuting in Wollongong.
  • I aim to have fun and build a profile as a local bicycle mayor with a passion for cycling for health, well-being, and our environment.
  • I aim to educate people on some of the practical logistics, navigation, and safety considerations of cycling in Wollongong.
