Cycling for All in Gelderland

In Gelderland, the largest province in the Netherlands, BYCS’ Co-founder and CFO, Maarten Woolthuis, had the privilege of contributing to a pivotal shift towards cycling as a means of transport. In 2024, he has focused on promoting road safety for vulnerable cyclists, building cycling infrastructure, and making cycling a seamless part of everyday life for more people in Gelderland. But we’re not stopping there. We’re now turning our attention to the real, everyday mobility needs of children and families, and bringing cycling into broader conversations about social impact and health.

Cycling isn’t just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about creating connections, promoting well-being, and contributing to the health of our communities. Through thoughtful initiatives, Maarten has worked with partners to show that cycling can have a profound effect on creating healthier, more equitable cities. Some of the most impactful initiatives They’ve worked on include:

1. A new subsidy scheme for walking and cycling routes, designed to improve access to these sustainable transport options, alongside the installation of bicycle sheds around bus stops, making it easier for people to choose cycling as a complement to public transport.

2. Stimulating pilot projects aimed at improving cycling skills, particularly for those who face barriers to mobility, such as status holders, helping them integrate cycling into their daily routines.

3. Project supervision for encouraging cycling among the youngest generation, promoting independence and supporting mental health through cycling at schools.

4. Knowledge exchange with national initiatives like the #NationaalMasterplanWalking and #CityDealCycling for Everyone, to further explore and implement the welfare benefits of cycling.

Working alongside national organisations, we’ve seen firsthand how cross-collaboration can turn challenges into opportunities. The results speak for themselves: increased cycling skills, more families choosing bikes over cars, and a greater collective understanding of how cycling impacts overall quality of life.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but we know that this is just the beginning. Together, we’re laying the foundation for a future where cycling isn’t just a mode of transport, but a movement for healthier, more vibrant cities.

A special thank you to all incredible partners for making this possible: the Provincial Government of Gelderland, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the European Cycling Federation, UCI, the Dutch Cycling Embassy, CROW, and all the local partners and organisations that have worked tirelessly to promote cycling and walking for all.
