I am Salome J. Kanini, a 32 year old Kenyan woman and a cyclist based here in Nairobi. I strongly advocate cycling as part of a healthy lifestyle and as a friendly environmentally means of transportation in congested urban settings, i.e. Nairobi. I have taken the initiative to break down social barriers and negative gender norms that prevent women and girls from cycling. To make my approach effective I came up with a women monthly ride group (Dadarides- ‘Sister rides’) in Nairobi city that calls all interested women to join and ride together.
How would you describe your mission?
Promoting cycling in Nairobi City to attract many people to cycle to work.
What are the obstacles and challenges you’re facing in your city?
✓ No bike lanes
✓ No Bike Parking
✓ Commuters are reluctant on safety gears while cycling
✓ Cyclists are not involved in road planning and design
What are your next steps now that you are the Bicycle Mayor?
✓ Organize awareness rides and create awareness about my new position as the Nairobi Bicycle Mayor
✓ Approach several organizations and present new proposals
✓ Involve other cycling groups to support and promote the Nairobi Bicycle social media updates and events
What can other cities learn from your city?
Before coming up with a road design, bike lanes & walk lanes have to be factored in.
