David Dixon

I am an ex-headteacher who now works freelance with schools to help develop their leadership for sustainability. Being a lifelong cyclist fits well with this because it’s a practical way of showing sustainability in action. I was part of Climate Action Lewisham’s Cycling Library scheme and developed travel plans for the schools I led. These included teaching children and parents how to use and maintain bikes and gaining access to bikes for those in less fortunate circumstances.

I aim to massively raise the profile of cycling in our community by emphasising the health and environmental benefits for everyone. Of course, getting more people to use bikes doesn’t happen by magic and part of my role will be changing hearts and minds in tandem with lobbying for better infrastructure and access. This will encourage more people to adopt cycling as their natural choice of transport. The overall aim is to create a strong and inclusive cycling culture in Tyne Valley.
