Bridging the Gap Between Health and Mobility for Children

Establishing healthy physical activity habits like cycling during childhood is not just beneficial, it’s essential. Research shows that active children are more likely to maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood, reducing risks of obesity and chronic diseases. Yet, alarmingly, physical inactivity among children is on the rise. As a result, we must take action now to empower children to engage in daily physical activities. With regards to this research and approach, central to BYCS’s overall work, we are thrilled to announce our partnership with Cities for Better Health (formerly Cities Changing Diabetes) to focus on increasing cycling among children.

Launching Initiatives in Vulnerable Communities

Our first joint project under the Cycle for Better Health initiative will target vulnerable communities in Bogota, Colombia, and Bratislava, Slovakia. In Bogota’s Suba and Usaquén neighbourhoods, we are partnering with local champions, Mamacitas en Bici, to kick off this vital work. Here over 75 young children have already enrolled, and together, we are committed to making cycling a regular part of their lives.

By focusing on local implementation, we aim to foster an environment where cycling is not only accessible but encouraged as part of the neighbourhood’s culture, allowing children to reap the immediate and long-term benefits of physical activity. This is a critical step toward bridging the gap between health and mobility sectors, demonstrating that cycling is a cornerstone of public health advocacy.

A Global Call to Action for Children’s Health

Cycle for Better Health is just the beginning. As we expand this initiative to additional cities, our goal is to create a global movement that prioritises children’s health through active mobility. We are excited to announce a third city soon, further amplifying our message that cycling is a key element in promoting physical activity, enhancing well-being, and building stronger communities.

We urge all stakeholders, governments, health organisations, and local communities to recognise the importance of integrating cycling into our urban landscapes. Let’s work together to create cities where every child has the opportunity to thrive, fostering health equity and sustainability for future generations.
