I am Jaime Novo, Bicycle Mayor of Madrid since December 2019. I work as a journalist at ATRESMEDIA group and I´ll try to focus my work on promoting and communicating the benefits of cycling to all those who don’t use their bike yet on a daily basis. I´m sure they will soon!
How would you describe your mission?
I´m not alone! I´ll be working with an awesome team of 5 urban cyclists and passionate people that want things to be better in Madrid. They are designers, architects, communicators and cycle tourism specialists. Together, I believe we can transform Madrid into a more bicycle-friendly city and, why not, with hard work and perseverance, I’m sure we can achieve the 50×30 goal!
What are the obstacles and challenges you’re facing in your city?
There are still two major barriers to overcome in Madrid. Long distances between home & work and the danger that new cyclists experience when sharing road space with other motor vehicles.
What are your next steps now that you are the Bicycle Mayor?
We will be focusing on schools, local governments, and work centres. For every step we make we will be communicating this to mass media!
What can other cities learn from your city?
When there are no bike lanes to be seen on the roads, cyclists can ride in the middle of the car lane, which means that we don´t have to stay on the right-hand side of the road. That makes our rides safer!
